Welcome back to a brand-new school year!
We hope that your school year has started smoothly and it's been an exciting start. The Miller Advisory Council (MAC) is back in session, and we are excited to continue working with you to support our students and school community.
This year begins at a time of change within the TDSB, with uncertainty around trustee representation. Now more than ever, MAC can be your voice in the Miller community. We act as advisors to the Principal, Vice-Principal, Superintendent, and School Board Trustee. Topics of discussion often include classroom organization, the impact of budget cuts, and how these changes affect our children’s education.
But to make a difference, we need your voice at the table. Please consider joining us—your input shapes the decisions we make for our students.
Fundraising – Why It Matter
Budget cuts from the Board and Ministry have reduced resources and equipment for our school, but MAC believes our children’s education should not suffer because of this. Through fundraising, we’ve been able to:
Supply the school with electronic equipment, giving students access to technology and research tools.
Provide each teacher with annual classroom funds to purchase up-to-date resources.
Support enrichment programs like Scientist in the School that bring hands-on learning to classrooms.
Ensure that all classes can go on up to two school trips per year
Last year, thanks to your support, we raised approximately $20,000 through our fundraising efforts. These funds will go toward trips, events, equipment, and offsetting budget shortfalls in the 2025-2026 year. Now, we begin the important work of fundraising for the coming year.
Highlights from Last Year
Arts by Kids Project – students designed and ordered personalized items with their artwork.
Teacher Appreciation- celebrating our teachers and thanking them for all they do!
Snack Shacks- Where we provided snacks to students at a reasonable cost throughout the year
Annual Community Spring Fair – a fun-filled event that brought our whole community together.
Fun Lunches- partnering with community restaurants for cheap and easy accessible meals.
This year, we plan to continue our great traditions while introducing new and exciting initiatives—and we’d love your creative ideas to make them happen!
The Importance of Communication
Effective communication is the backbone of any school community. It helps to keep everyone informed and engaged. When schools communicate well, parents feel more connected, students are more involved, and teachers can better support their students.
Parents need to know about events, meetings, and changes in school policies. This information helps them support their children’s education.
Students benefit from being aware of upcoming events, deadlines, and opportunities. This knowledge can motivate them to participate and take advantage of what the school offers.
Teachers rely on clear communication to coordinate with parents and students. They need to share important information and updates about their classes.
By fostering a culture of open communication, MAC can create a more inclusive environment for everyone involved.
Importance of Parent Council
Parent Councils play a crucial role in the educational experience of students and the overall functioning of schools. Here are some reasons why they are important:
Advocacy for Students
Parent Councils advocate for the needs and interests of students, ensuring that their voices are heard in school decisions.
Community Engagement
They foster a sense of community among parents, teachers, and school administration, promoting collaboration and support.
Resource Allocation
Parent Councils can influence how resources are allocated within the school, ensuring that funds are used effectively to benefit students.
Communication Channel
They serve as a communication bridge between parents and the school, facilitating the sharing of information and concerns.
Support for School Initiatives
Parent Councils often support school initiatives and programs, helping to enhance the educational environment.
Volunteer Opportunities
They provide opportunities for parents to get involved in school activities, fostering a stronger school community.
Join School Meetings
Participating in school meetings allows parents to stay informed about school policies, initiatives, and events, and to contribute their perspectives on important issues.
